The Intent of Lifeline Australia:
LIfeline Australia is the peak
body for the 41 Lifeline Centres
which operate throughout rural
and regional Australia.
Lifeline Centres provide 24
crisis counselling service by
trained volunteers. The service
is nationally accessible via the
one 13 number for the cost of a
local call.
LIfeline Australia auspices
Living Works - an international
suicide prevention program which
has trained 15,000 people since
its inception in 1996.
Recent Accomplishments of Lifeline
Australia:
Establishment of Just Ask - your
rural mental health information
services providing free,
anonymous information about
mental health issues to rural
and regional Australia;
National Call Database records
issues callers have raised with
counsellors providing
information about issues of
concern to Australians;
Provision of accredited training
for telephone counsellors -
Certificate iv in Telephone
Counselling.
Current
Activities of Lifeline Australia:
Lifeline Australia is currently
preparing for the 40 th
anniversary of Lifeline in
Australia and will seek to
contact the more than 50,000
counsellors it has trained since
1963.
Every year telephone counsellors
provide almost half a million
hours of listening to the
Australian community. That is 52
years of compassion every year!
